Kate Millbank had known David Merritt from the time they were children together. So she was thrilled to hear that the major was returning from the wars. What she hadn’t considered was that war might have changed David into someone angry and bitter. Or that she had no business pining for the illegitimate son of an illicit liaison. But Kate believed in miracles. Regency Romance by Anne Barbour; originally published by Signet

I really enjoy Ms Barbour's writing and it's such a pleasure to read after reading some real junk over the past few weeks. Basically the H is the illegitimate son of an Earl and he returns home after he is injured in battle overseas. His father is dying and he is surrounded once again by his father's legitimate family - his stepmother, the countess, his half brother the heir and twin half siblings. In the mix is his cousin Kate, an orphan and an heiress, who grew up with him until he joined the military. As it turns out there is a huge surprise when the will is finally read upon the Earl's death. Most readers will guess the surprise long before it comes. Meanwhile the H and h resume their friendship but with many ups and downs. The H is a shadow of his former self - battling with his injury, his nightmares and his guilt over the h's brother's death. I have to say that I did struggle with the main characters endless confrontations - a bit wearing. I liked the characters very much though including the secondary characters. I wouldn't have minded an epilogue but that's probably pretty modern and this is a traditional and clean RegencyProduct details

Kate and the Soldier edition by Anne Barbour Romance eBooks Reviews
The hero returns to his childhood home from war, broken in both body and spirit. He has been recuperating at the home of a friend as he is not welcome by his stepmother due to his illegitimate birth. His father, who is very ill, has requested his presence. He struggles with his own demons and the disdain of his family...while his childhood affection for an orphaned distant cousin turns into a love which he is too beaten down to accept. There are some other plot twists that, frankly, I could see a mile away, but they still added a new dimension to a less familiar plot. I enjoyed the story and found that it really became of more interest to me than the romance. (An unusual state of affairs.) To be honest, I found that I just didn't care about the hero and heroine as a couple as much as I cared about them as individuals in the story. I liked the subtle and unresolved secondary romance, and that the nasty half-brother was not left without any redeeming qualities.
This is an interesting story of the illegitimate son of a Lord who returns from war after being severely wounded only to find a very cold welcome from his father's legal son and from his stepmother. The only family member to welcome him is a distant cousin who lives with the family and who has loved him since they were children growing up together. The stepmother demands that he leave asap but everything changes after his father's will is read. There is also an ongoing excavation of Roman ruins on the family estate that he gets involved in. The romance with his cousin matures and family dynamics are worked out by story's end.
This is the first Anne Barbour book I'm reviewing, but not the first I've read, and it was not a favorite. I was completely captivated for the first half. The characters are lovable and interesting, there is a Roman ruin on the property that we get to learn something about, and the writing is, of course, solid. We also, from his inner musings, know the H is carrying a burden, an emotional burden, one he's certain will cost him the love and esteem of his beloved, the h.
So, we're curious to know the dreadful truth, but for me, I was unconvinced, once the 'big reveal' came, of the crisis, of how the H could possibly think himself culpable in the situation. Plus, his emotions in the matter did not engage me at all, and after that, well, the story fell a little flat.
Do I recommend? Well, yes, it's worth the read. I only wish the second half had pulled me in as well as the first part of the story.
There was an extremely unusual twist here to a familiar theme that made this story do a complete 180 for me...in a good way. It may have been done before but I'd never seen it and it was a lulu. It definitely enhanced what could have otherwise been a plain vanilla story.
Kate and David were good people who had to deal with David's grasping, conniving step-mother and his worthless half-brother. This, on top of the nightmares and the unremitting pain David suffered from a serious war wound. But there were pleasant secondary characters too. And though this was a quieter, a little more somber story than the Barbour norm, it was interesting.
Both Kate and David felt great insecurity with each other's feelings and this led to many misunderstandings which were frequently unresolved due to temper flare-ups. Endless misunderstandings are a bone of contention with me...I want people to stop mousing around and just spit it out. The vulnerable state of their emotions, though, made their confusion somewhat more palatable. Still, they eventually got on my nerves.
Otherwise, this was a sweet, interesting story. It moved at a good clip but carefully enough to develop the plot and the characters. The plot twist I mentioned earlier, with the changing dynamics between characters, absolutely SAVED this story for me and made it a pretty nice afternoon read.
If you don't have my problem with ongoing misunderstandings in a story, I think you may like this a lot. (I know I can be way too picky)
Enjoy your reading! )
For some weird reason the Roman theme in this tale grabbed my interest, particularly when Barbour intertwines the threads of the two soldiers, (possibly) both artists and definitely both marked (physically and emotionally) by the horrors of war, albeit well over one thousand years apart.
Kate and the Soldier is otherwise a standard returned soldier story (which I found while unsuccessfully searching for another title about a soldier returning from the Peninsular/Napoleonic War) with misunderstandings, friendship turned to love, an evil step-mother, wise aunt etc etc etc. Irrespective of the fact that this theme has been done to death, the romance is rather sweet.
But it is the moments that Kate and her soldier spend together at the Roman ruins which I liked the most and especially when Kate is struck by the image of the two haunted faces.
