Demystifying the Spanish Subjunctive Feel the Fear and 'Subjunctive ' Anyway! edition by Gordon SmithDurán Cynthia SmithDurán Children eBooks

A very helpful guide or review book for English speakers grappling with the Spanish subjunctive. It has many useful hints that I had not heard in years from taking university level Spanish grammar courses. Instead of heavy linguistic knowledge and terms, this book relies on clues and "triggers" to help identify when to use the subjunctive correctly rather than dealing with contradictory definitions drilled in grammar classes. There are some contexts which I hoped had more of a presence (negative sentences, past subjunctive, etc) but a very good book for when starting out and I highly recommend to students just being introduced into the subjunctive.

[UPDATE to 5/5] After some time and practice, I realize how helpful this book has been. When you work through the whole book (the whole book!), you will come away with a much greater understanding of the subjunctive than you will find in any expensive Spanish textbook or native speaker, and I say this as a Spanish educator. More than offering beginners a much better definition of what the subjunctive mood is, it will help those even at the advanced level of Spanish for those moments when you freeze and wonder if to use the subjunctive or not. This is information best for native English speakers as a lot of subjunctive confusion comes from the fact we rarely use it in English. Not only is it new to us, Spanish speakers have little appreciation of how difficult subjunctive can be for English speakers. That's why I say this is more helpful than a native speaker who, even themselves, are unaware of the trigger phrases that the subjunctive.

By the end of the book (if you did all the exercises), using the subjunctive will start to become more natural and you will catch yourself saying triggers "espero que..." and using the subjunctive "...ellos lleguen pronto."

If you struggle with the subjunctive, buy this book.

This book is really thorough. And then I discovered that Gordon also has a series of YouTube videos that reinforce the lessons in the book. ¡Qué bueno! 😎
This has been a terrific tool for me in my effort to learn Spanish. After a year in Mexico, the concept of the subjunctive continued to be a puzzle...although I'm still in the process of grasping it, this book has helped immensely. I have suggested this book to others, as well!
Another amazing book by Cynthia and Gordon Smith;Durán. Their books should be required for every Spanish course/ learner. It would take a lot of the difficulties and frustration from essential learning skills.
I've been reading the book and working the exercises several times a week ... While briskly walking on the treadmilli at my local gym! The book is clearly written and offers a practical view of how, when, and why to use the subjunctive. There is a good quantity of exercises included with each chapter that have helped me to become better familiar with the "triggers" that signal the need for subjunctive conjugation
I would recommend this book for an intermediate level student of Spanish, who would like to brush up or get a better working knowledge of how and when to use the subjunctive.

.
Excellent book. A clear and straight forward presentation of this important area of Spanish. There are many examples and exercises to test and reinforce your knowledge. There's even a verb conjugation index for many highly used verbs. This is as good as it gets to learn the subjunctive. I have been hearing for years how tricky the "subjunctive mood" was to get a handle on, and how even native Spanish speakers couldn't tell you why or when they use it. Or that it was very difficult for English speakers to understand because English really doesn't have a subjunctive mood/tense. My Spanish has gotten to a level where I now need to learn the subjunctive to further improve, and this book is really helping.
I have studied Castellano off and on for years and the subjunctive remained a partial mystery until now. Probably the best book and easiest method for integrating the intuitive use of subjunctive into daily dialogue. EASY to use and follow. A true masterpiece that I wish I had 50 years ago.
This is an excellent book. It's clear, well-written, and full of exercises. The author asks us to do the exercises three times -- which is a smart way of proceeding, because it really nails down the concepts as you go through the book. Focusing on the patterns that provoke the subjunctive, and narrowing the "motivations" to five, makes the subjunctive easier to understand and implement in writing and in speech. It is helpful to use the Lightspeed Spanish videos on YouTube to supplement and reinforce what the book is teaching you.
